Title: Lesson 1: Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages in everyday life
Standard(s): 5.NF.A.1
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12 (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd).
SMP#2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
Lesson Overview: This lesson will introduce fractions, percentages, and decimals in everyday life.
Resources or Materials Needed
Time: 60 Minutes

Resources or Materials Needed
- T Chart
- White Boards and Markers
- Pencils
- Notebooks
- Anchor Chart Paper
- 10 x 10 Grid Paper
Time: 60 Minutes
Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities
- Teacher will create an anchor chart with the vocabulary terms: fractions, decimals, and percent’s
- Discussion: Teacher will ask, “A fast food chain once had a 1/4lb cheeseburger on the menu and decided they wanted to sell more for the same exact price so they put on the menu 1/3lb cheeseburger for the same price as the 1/4lb cheeseburger, and the fast food chains sales of the cheeseburger dropped substantially. Why do you think the sales declined so much?
- The teacher will create an anchor chart with everyday uses of fractions, decimals, and percentages
- The teacher will show personal example of each decimal, percent, and fraction in an everyday use
- The students will copy these examples down in their notebooks
- Teacher will ask students to think about how fractions, percentages, and decimals are alike
- Teacher will write ½=.5=50% after an extended discussion about the similarities between the three items
- Students will be broken into pre-determined groups of 5
- Students will be asked to brainstorm their own ideas of real life situations where they have seen or heard of numbers that are either a fraction, decimal, or a percent
- Students will write these examples on the anchor chart
- A short teacher led discussion will take place
- A pre-assessment indicated that the students do not have a very good understanding of fractions, specifically adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators
- The teacher will circulate around the room during the group time and observe student’s understanding of the content
- Students will complete a post assessment at the end of the instructional unit
- Students will be asked to complete a brief assessment at home:
- Cut out any fractions, decimals, or percent’s from magazines, newspaper, etc. and glue them onto the homework page.
